DeWitt Johnston, beloved member of the Covenant United Methodist Church family, passed away on May 10, 2024, at the age of 77.
Born on February 14, 1947, Dewitt persisted through many challenges in his life, facing them with resourcefulness and a cheerful spirit. He connected with many people in the Culver Road/Parsells Avenue neighborhood, and later in the nursing homes where he lived.
The church was important to him, and until health issues limited his mobility, he found ways to be helpful around the church, including running the church’s sound board during worship. DeWitt was in church whenever transportation could be arranged.
DeWitt did wordsearch puzzles, played computer card games, and participated in bingo. He enjoyed the company of dogs and cats.
In his later years, DeWitt could often be seen sitting in his wheelchair in the lobby of the nursing home or outside if weather permitted. DeWitt will be remembered for the playful, joking way he endeared himself to his friends in the church, the staff at his nursing home, and everyone he met.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Covenant United Methodist Church, 1124 Culver Road, Rochester, New York at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 23. The service will be live-streamed on the church’s Facebook page, accessible through the church’s website, covenantroc.org. Private interment.
