Betty Ann Glass was born January 8, 1949, in Kingstree, South Carolina to Fred and Bertha Mitchum. She was the eighth of nine children born to this union.
Betty left South Carolina and moved to Rochester, New York where she graduated from East High School in 1966. She was later united in marriage with John Glass. Their union was blessed with two children.
Betty was employed with St. John’s Nursing Home where she worked for over 30 years as a Laundry Assistant. She also worked in a part-time custodial position at the downtown Chase Bank.
A woman who deeply loved the Lord, Betty made a habit of reading her Bible and listening to Gospel music. Her favorite song was “Your Grace and Mercy”. She joined New Bethel CME Church and later moved her membership to Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to her spiritual walk, family was a priority with Betty. Her daily routine consisted of calling her two sisters, Shirley and Georgia, and other family members. She enjoyed sharing her dreams and aspirations with her loved ones. Betty was an excellent cook, so when she was in good health, “Betty’s place” was the place to go for a delicious Sunday meal or just stop by for a plate. Of course, no one could resist her cakes!
Betty entered into rest on May 16, 2026. She is predeceased by her parents, Fred and Bertha Mitchum; two brothers, Willie and Edward Mitchum; five sisters: Adell Hannah, Caretha Pressley, Mattie Tisdale, Henrietta Tucker, and Shirley Mitchum. She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, John Glass of Atlanta, GA; her children: Crystal Glass of Rochester, NY and Jermaine Glass of Charleston, SC; four grandchildren: Sha’Quanda, Savi, Ci’Mia, and Mycere; two great-grandchildren, Amar’e and Ce’Ana; her sister, Georgia (Pastor James L.) Cuyler Sr. of Rochester, NY; and a host of nephews, nieces, church family, other family near and far, and special cousin, Lila Mae Swails; many dear friends, including special friends, Barbara Gibson, and Jo-Ann Davis.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 11AM with prior visitation from 10-11AM at Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church, 111 Clifton St., Rochester, NY 14611. Rev. James L. Culyer, Pastor, Eulogist. Interment: Oakwood Cemetery.
