Deacon Raleigh McGill June 12, 1932 – June 7, 2026
Deacon Raleigh McGill, a devoted man of faith, family, and service, peacefully transitioned from this life on Sunday, June 7, 2026. Born on June 12, 1932, in Kingstree, South Carolina, he was the second of ten children born to Burgess McGill and Esther Ervin McGill. Raised in a home rooted in faith, Raleigh attended the St. Mark AME Church at a young age, beginning a lifelong walk with the Lord that shaped his character, his compassion, and his unwavering commitment to others.
As one of the oldest children, Raleigh embraced responsibility early. When his mother became ill, he stepped into the role of caregiver—tending to his younger siblings, managing household duties, and even learning to cook for the family. What began as necessity grew into a lifelong love of cooking; even at 93, he continued preparing full meals with pride and joy.
In 1955, Raleigh married the love of his life, Ruth Brown, beginning a union that would span more than 70 years. That same year, following the passing of his father in 1952, he relocated his mother and siblings to Rochester, New York. Raleigh and Ruth also moved north in search of opportunity and to remain close to the family who still depended on him. His belief that “charity starts at home and spreads abroad” guided him from childhood through his final days.
A dedicated provider, Raleigh worked tirelessly to support his growing family. After arriving in Rochester, he was first employed at American Laundry Machine Company. He later secured a position at Burroughs Corporation, where he worked faithfully for more than 35 years.
Raleigh’s spiritual foundation remained central throughout his life. In March 1956, he joined Mt. Vernon Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Robert Warfield. He served faithfully for 70 years, and in 1967, he was ordained as a deacon. Known for his gentle presence and servant’s heart, he regularly visited the sick and shut‑in—offering prayer, communion, and encouragement wherever it was needed.
At the age of twenty, Raleigh became a member of the Masonic Lodge in South Carolina. After relocating to Rochester, he joined Antioch Lodge Number 2, where he earned its highest honors and formed lifelong bonds of brotherhood.
Raleigh will be remembered as a kind, humble, and God‑fearing man who loved his family deeply. His warm smile, steady wisdom, and words of faith uplifted all who crossed his path.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Keith “Jack” McGill; sisters, Eda May McGill, Nathene McGill Rich, Lila Annette McGill McDowell, Sherry Ann McGill Jamison, Ida McGill Davis, Mary Cunningham Williams, and Alafair Cunningham Cooper; and brothers, Isaac McGill, Doward Cunningham, and Herman Abraham McGill.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of 70 years, Ruth McGill; his children, Francetta Cockfield, Queenester (Michael) Anderson, Bernard (Pam) McGill, Ervin McGill, Barbara McGill, Eric “Ross” (April) McGill, and Lloyd Harvey; 17 grandchildren; 26 great‑grandchildren; 2 great‑great‑grandchildren; one brother; one sister; and a host of relatives, church family, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Deacon Raleigh McGill lived a life of purpose, faith, and love. His legacy will continue to shine through the many lives he touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 20th 11am (Visitation 9-11am) at Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church, 351 Joseph Ave. Rev. Cedric Cooper, Pastor, officiant.
