Obituaries

Hal Joseph Rosensteel, 41 Years, of Rochester NY, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on September 4, 1984 in Cleveland Ohio, Hal lived a life grounded in kindness, connection, and a deep love for animals, especially dogs. He will be remembered for his big heart, his willingness to help anyone, his love for animals, and the way he made people, and dogs, feel seen and safe. His presence will be deeply missed, but his kindness and spirit will continue to live on through the countless lives he touched. Hal was an organ donor, and through that selfless choice, he continued to help others and give the gift of life after his passing reflecting the heart he carried every day.

Hal found peace in the outdoors, where his love for animals felt most at home. Whether surrounded by dogs, open air, or simple moments in nature, he felt deeply connected to the world around him. A devoted dog trainer and true “dog whisperer,” he never met a dog he couldn’t approach or understand. Dogs seemed to trust him instantly, sensing the calm and safety he carried so naturally. His Heart belonged most especially to his beloved dog Cleo, whom he adored more than anything in this world. Cleo was his constant companion, his safe space, and a source of immeasurable joy.

Beyond his love for animals, Hal was someone who showed up for others. He was always ready to listen, to talk through life’s challenges, or to lend a hand, whether that meant working in someone’s yard, fixing a car, tackling an odd job around the house or trying his best to repair just about anything. He had a gift for conversation and could talk with anyone for hours, forming friendships everywhere he went. Because of this, he leaves behind friends from all walks of life and from many places, each carrying their own story of his kindness and warmth.

Hal is survived by his mother, Kathleen Hart; brother, James (Lindsey) Butler; four sisters, Megan (Fabio) Rosensteel, Dawn (Chris) Davison, Michelle Dibiase, Jaclyn (Jake) Rittenberry; 9 nieces and 4 nephews; his chosen family, Janet; many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and several animals. Hal was proceeded in death by his father, grandparents, nephew, best friends (Mike D. and Justin) and many other friends and family along the way.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Lollipop Farm or ROCovery Fitness in his memory.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 1:00pm-3:00pm at Dierna Funeral Home, 2309 Culver Road, Rochester NY.

  1. I am so sorry for your loss… and with that continue to celebrate Hal. Let him not be forgotten, but let his character shine through you… always say his name… it is in death that we can truly measure how much we love someone… may the Lord wrap his arms around you in times when the pain is unmanageable, may you be armored in the faith and all grief be given to God and is through him that we can handle all things… may his animals be loved and cherished by other people he trusted most… in Jesus’s name I pray amen
