Mr. John Brockington was born to the late John Brockington Sr. and Annette Mack Brockington in the Spring Gully section of Williamsburg County, South Carolina. Our beloved, John entered eternal peace and rest on Sunday, June 11, 2023.
At an early age John received basic schooling, education and teachings through elders and the church. John attended Cedar Grove Baptist Church along with his family. The Brockington family was one of the first founding members of the church. He enjoyed church and he also was a singer in a quartet group. Growing up he helped working on the farm and developed a love for hunting and fishing.
In the early 1950’s John met and married Jesse Mae Odom. Later John relocated to Homestead, Florida where he farmed and worked for Miami Dade County Department of Transportation. After a short stay, John moved to Rochester, NY with the help of his aunt Georgianna Nesmith and cousins, Rebecca Green, Ezekiel Green and Minnie Cotton House. He was introduced and later married the love of his life Almettar Holmes.
John was a member of St. Paul Holiness Church until his departure. He became employed with the Labor Union Local 425 Construction Company and after 40 years of service he retired. He was also noted for help building the Liberty Pole Way in Downtown Rochester. NY.
John was known as the Game Man (a great hunter) in the Rochester area and known for his infamous hog head cheese. John was a man who loved his family dearly and enjoyed taking trips back to South Carolina to reminisce. During his trips back home, John always reminded his family to love each other despite the miles apart. He was known for his classy style especially his hats and shoes. He was his brothers’ keeper, (especially of his sisters), and family. John was willing to be a fatherly figure to any family members’ life by inviting them to live in Rochester, NY. He truly believed “actions speaks louder than words” and he always ended his phone calls with, “I love you and tell the rest I love them too.” He’s preceded in death by his loving wife Almettar Brockington, his brother Ernest (Maudie) his sisters Melby Gamble,
Lula Brown, Rebecca Dukes, Virginia Fulton, Elvira McCutchen and Beulah Richardson, two grandsons, Akeem Fitzpatrick and Terrance Brockington.
